Iowa News:

The latest 24-hour totals for COVID-19 in Iowa as of 10 a.m. on 8/1/20 from the Iowa Department of Public Health: There are 463 new positive cases and 7 more deaths due to the virus. That brings statewide totals to 44,937 positives and 872 deaths. Currently, 242 Iowans are hospitalized, 77 are in ICU, and 35 of those are on ventilators.

____________

If you are headed to Lake Red Rock this weekend, there are a couple of beaches you should avoid, due to high e-coli levels. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District is encouraging Iowans to skip swimming at the North Overlook and Whitebreast beaches because of “elevated bacteria levels.”

Local News:

Des Moines Public Schools is considering starting school later. They are now looking at moving to post-Labor Day for classes to begin. Additionally, they have petitioned the state to be able to start classes exclusively online. Des Moines is in Polk County which has the highest rate of COVID-19 infection in the state. Governor Reynolds is insisting that schools meet in person, and has set a high infection rate of 15% of a county’s population being infected, before she would find online-only teaching. That number is much higher than CDC recommendations, and many high-density cities, such as New York where the infection rate to move schools online is only 3%.
