A look back on milestones and memorable moments in the entertainment industry that happened the week of September 30.

September 30
1955: Actor James Dean was killed in the collision of his sports car with another automobile at the age of 24.
1982: “Cheers,” with Ted Danson and Shelly Long, made its debut on NBC.

October 1
1962: Johnny Carson took over as regular host of NBC’s “Tonight” show. He retired in 1992 after a 29-year reign.
1970: Jimi Hendrix was buried in his hometown of Seattle.
2011: Kiss bassist Gene Simmons married actress Shannon Tweed after dating for 28 years.

October 2
1959: “The Twilight Zone” made its debut on CBS.
1971: “Soul Train” went into national syndication. The show, hosted by Don Cornelius, premiered a year earlier in Chicago.
1985: Actor Rock Hudson died at his home in Beverly Hills, after battling AIDS.
2005: The divorce between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston was finalized.

October 3
1945: Elvis Presley made his first public appearance in a talent show at the age of 10. He won second place and a $5 prize.
1955: “Captain Kangaroo” premiered on CBS, and “The Mickey Mouse Club” made its debut on ABC.
2003: Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy was mauled by a white tiger during a performance in Las Vegas.

October 4
1957: “Leave It To Beaver” made its debut on CBS.
1970: Singer Janis Joplin was found dead of a heroin overdose at a hotel in Hollywood. She was 27.
1990: “Beverly Hills 90210” premiered on Fox.
1992: Singer Sinead O’Connor ripped up a picture of the pope during an after-midnight appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” NBC’s switchboard in New York was flooded with calls, most of them criticizing O’Connor’s actions.

Celebrities celebrating their birthdays this week included: Author Elie Wiesel (85); actress Angie Dickinson (82); singer Cissy Houston (80); rapper T-Pain (29) actress-singer Julie Andrews (78); actor Randy Quaid (63); actress-talk show host Kelly Ripa (43); singer Chubby Checker (72); singer/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac (64); and drummer Tommy Lee of Motley Crue (51); author Jackie Collins (76); singer Jon Secada (52); actress Alicia Silverstone (37).
