Sculpture used in ‘Wrecking Ball’ spoofs back on campus

University officials say they had to remove the sculpture after concerns over student safety.

ALLENDALE, Mich. (AP) — The wrecking ball is returning to display at a Michigan school.

Grand Valley State University says the swinging sculpture will be reinstalled on Tuesday outside of the Padnos Hall of Science.

The sculpture – a bifilar pendulum – was removed in September because of safety concerns after workers discovered the cable holding it was frayed.

Students at the Allendale campus had been riding on it more often since the release of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” video. Photos and video emerged of people parodying the Cyrus video, which shows her without clothes on a swinging wrecking ball.

Tim Thimmesch, associate vice president for Facilities Services, said educational signs about the artwork, made by faculty and staff in the Physics Department and Art Gallery, also will be installed.

The project is expected to be completed Dec. 6.
