December 7

1964: Singer Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys had a nervous breakdown on a flight between Houston and Los Angeles. It eventually led to his decision to drop from touring with the Beach Boys.

1967: The Beatles opened their Apple Boutique in London to the public. John Lennon and George Harrison had held a private opening party two days before.

1969: “Frosty the Snowman” first aired on CBS.

1990: The movie “Edward Scissorhands” opened nationwide.

Actress Priscilla Barnes (“Three’s Company”) is 56. Announcer Edd Hall (“The Tonight Show With Jay Leno”) is 55. Bassist Tim Butler of Psychedelic Furs is 55. Actor C. Thomas Howell is 47. Singer Nicole Appleton of All Saints is 38. Actress Shiri Appleby (“Roswell”) is 35. Singer Sara Bareilles is 34. Singer Aaron Carter is 26.


December 8

1961: The Beach Boys’ first single, “Surfin’,” was released.

1976: The Eagles released their “Hotel California” album.

1980: John Lennon was shot to death outside his New York City apartment building by an apparently deranged fan. He and wife Yoko Ono were returning home from a recording session. He was 40.

1984: Motley Crue singer Vince Neil crashed a sports car on a California highway, killing his passenger, Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle Dingley.

1991: Actor Gregory Peck and country legend Roy Acuff were honored at the Kennedy Center Honors. Acuff was the first country artist to receive the award.

1995: The surviving members of the Grateful Dead announced they were breaking up, after Jerry Garcia’s death the previous August.

2003: Ozzy Osbourne was seriously injured while riding a quad bike around his English estate. He hit an object and the bike landed on top of him.

2004: Guitarist Dimebag Darrell, formerly of Pantera, was shot and killed during a show with his new band, DamagePlan, in Columbus, Ohio. Three others also were killed before a police officer shot and killed the gunman, Nathan Gale.

Country singer Marty Raybon (The Raybon Brothers, Shenandoah) is 54. Guitarist Marty Friedman (Megadeth) is 51. Actress Teri Hatcher is 49. Actor David Harewood (“Homeland”) is 48. Rapper Bushwick Bill of Geto Boys is 47. Singer Sinead O’Connor is 47. Actor Matthew Laborteaux (“Little House on the Prairie”) is 47. Guitarist Ryan Newell of Sister Hazel is 41.
