One night, Prince Ivan goes hunting & encounters a fabulous bird with plumage of fire. The bird avoids the Prince’s arrow & tries to escape, but the prince grabs her before she can fly away. In exchange for her freedom she gives him a magic feather. Later, Prince Ivan beholds a princess dancing & playing with golden apples. The princess warns him of the wicked magician Kaschei whose sport it is to turn unwary travelers to stone. Not heeding this warning, Ivan enters the castle & is threatened by Kaschei himself. Out of a swirling storm of colorful light, the Firebird magically appears & drives the magician into a mad dance. In the end, Kaschei is destroyed & Ivan wins the hand of the Princess. Imaginative storytelling and striking theatrical effects enhance this innovative production: an enchanted tree bears golden apples, the evil magician conjures up a terrible storm shooting burning lightning bolts and statues of stone come to life. Weaving together physical theatre, masks, puppetry, shadow play and magic with the evocative music of Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Enchantment Theatre eloquently tells this captivating tale.
